SKIN DIMPLING
What is Cellulite?
Cellulite is simply a term that describes the appearance of bumpy looking fat on the body. It is not an actual disease, but it is a condition of bulging fat cells and other coexisting factors that result in the appearance of cellulite.
Sometimes the fat cells expand so much that they cause the collagen fibers around them to bend causing puckering, or dimpling of the skin above. There are three layers of fat found in the body. Cellulite is located in the layer of fat closest to the skin. There fat cells are enclosed in pockets formed by collagen fibers.
Sometimes the fat cells squeeze on the connective tissues (collagen fibers) and there is little room for the lymphatic drainage system to relieve this build-up of fluids, fats, and toxins. Fat in this layer does not respond well to diet or exercise. Fibrous strands can cause performing successful liposuction to be difficult in this layer of fat. Also, hormones can be responsible for the accumulation of fat in our cellulite layer.
The next two layers of fat are not structured. The fat cells are not separated by connective tissue. The fat in these layers is also, to some degree genetically influenced. The big difference is that the fat in these layers is also easily coaxed by lifestyle and dietary changes.
Why should we care about having cellulite? In the competitive world we live in, how we look and feel about ourselves can sometimes dictate important aspects of life, including love, employment and personal friendships.
CELLULITE REDUCTION
In order for cellulite reduction to occur, one or more of these factors must be met. First, the fat cells in the subterraneous layer of fat must shrink significantly. Secondly, the fat cells must become separated from each other and have enough space between them for proper lymphatic drainage to occur. The body’s ability to drain unwanted toxins and lymphatic waste from the body must improve, reducing undesirable swelling in those areas of the body. Third, the connective tissues must stretch and become elongated, thereby improving skin tone and elasticity. Lastly, hormonal conditions must stop fluctuating and stabilize, reaching a better hormonal balance.
There exists a myriad of treatments to reduce cellulite. You may benefit from a mult-prong approach to cellulite reduction, because some of these treatments improve some of the above-mentioned factors, whereas other treatments focus primarily on the remaining elements.
CELLULITE TREATMENTS
TRIACTIVE THERAPY
What is TriActive LaserDermatology?
In the battle against cellulite, Cynosure, Inc. of Westford, Mass., has introduced a unique laser-based treatment into the non-invasive body-sculpting arena with TriActive LaserDermology, a system that utilizes three separate mechanisms to make skin smoother and more beautiful.
Cynosure received FDA approval for TriActive in April, 2005, although the system, developed in Italy, has been used worldwide for several years. The really good news for Cynosure was that TriActive was classified as a Class II over-the-counter device, meaning that it can be used by non-physicians such as aestheticians, spa professionals, and other therapists.
An estimated 45 million American women between the ages of 20 and 50 have cellulite, the dimpled skin that occurs primarily on the hips, thighs and buttocks. TriActive attacks the problem by combining a low energy laser to increase circulation, localized cooling to reduce inflammation and suction massage that promotes lymphatic drainage and stimulates collagen growth.
Typically, 10 to 15 treatments (total cost is around $1,500) are required to achieve the desired outcome, although results differ in individuals depending on factors such as exercise, diet, number of treatments and the severity of the problem. TriActive can also be used as a followup to surgical procedures such as liposuction, which frequently causes a slackening of the skin in the neck, tummy, upper arms and “love-handles.”
“Before we had the TriActive, there was nothing that would reliably address extensive cellulite,” explained Dr. Bruce Katz, Director of the Cosmetic Surgery and Laser Clinic at Mount Sinai Hospital and clinical professor at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. “Initially, we were very skeptical about the device because we had been down that road before. We started using it about a year ago and now it is our preferred method. We use it to treat women who have extensive cellulite, involving the thighs, buttock and hips, and the results have been terrific.”
Since there really is no permanent “cure” for reducing cellulite, monthly maintenance is recommended following the initial series of treatments. Patients don’t mind, since the massage-like treatment is pleasurable.
“A recent study conducted at our center showed that the TriActive laser and massage components improved the appearance of cellulite in 83% of subjects as compared to 17% improvement for massage only,” said Dr. Kathryn Frew of the JUVA Skin and Laser Center in New York City.
In addition to temporarily improving the appearance of cellulite, TriActive treatments have also been shown to temporarily relieve minor pain and muscle spasms and improve circulation.
“The TriActive LaserDermology System complements the other products in our cosmetic laser line,” said Cynosure CEO Michael R. Davin, “and helps us better serve our markets, which include the thousands of aesthetic medicine practices and the more than 6,000 day spas in the United States who do not necessarily have an associated physician relationship.”
VELASMOOTH THERAPY
What is Velasmooth?
On the cutting edge in the rapidly expanding field of body sculpting is VelaSmooth from Syneron Medical Ltd . A modern, non-invasive treatment that utilizes an innovative approach to reducing cellulite and leaving skin smoother and less dimpled. The treatment combines infrared light and radio frequencies along with mechanical massage and vacuum suction to manipulate fatty tissue, resulting in reduction of collagen and improved circulation to the area.
VelaSmooth is safe for any kind of skin and particularly effective on large areas of the body such as the abdomen, thighs, buttocks or upper arms. The initial treatment consists of 16 sessions over eight weeks with each session lasting 45 minutes to an hour. Best of all, there’s no down time. Patients can resume normal activity after the treatment.
Maintenance treatments are usually done once a month after the initial series. Patients say the treatment feels like a warm deep tissue massage; others say it’s mildly uncomfortable. Treatments cost from around $150 to $200 apiece.
The recently developed Contour Applicator makes VelaSmooth treatments even more effective. Ergonomically designed to fit comfortably in the user’s hand, the Contour Applicator facilitates spot treatments in hard-to-reach areas.
This Contour Applicator will allow these physicians to further enhance the VelaSmooth treatments.”
Since receiving FDA clearance in June 2005, more than 100,000 patients have been treated with VelaSmooth.
