CESAREAN DELIVERY
A cesarean delivery, or C-section , is where the baby is delivered through an incision in the abdominal wall and the uterus. There are many reasons that occur during pregnancy that require the baby be delivered via C-section, and most are because your doctors are trying to maximize the health of both the baby and the mother.
Common indications for a C-section:
· Malpresentation: is when the baby is when the baby is coming down the birth canal in an unsafe way such as breech ( butt first) presentation, or an elbow presentation, or cetain types of face presentations
· Congenital abnormalities with the baby: like hydrocephalus, or non-development of the baby’s stomach wall as in gastroschisis or omphalocele
· Nonreassuring heart rate pattern of the baby: is when the baby’s heart rate pattern is of some concern to the doctors
· Genital herpes infections: mothers with active herpes infection are candidates for delivery via c-section to avoid infecting the baby through the birth canal. Babies with herpes infections can have life –threatening problems.
· Human immunodeficiency virus infections : delivery via C-section may lower the risk of viral transmission to the baby.
· Placenta previa : is where the placenta is covering the cervix and there is a high risk of severe bleeding
· Large babies that will not come down the birth canal
· Women with a scar on the uterus from previous surgery like removal of a fibroid tumor
Anesthesia
Anesthesia for a C – section is given so that you do not feel the surgery. Spinal anesthesia will numb you from the upper stomach area to your feet. At times you may have to be put to sleep with general anesthesia especially if the doctors need to deliver the baby rapidly.
Incision
Bikini incisions are the most common type of incisions we make and we try to place them as low and as small as we can. Very rarely a midline incision is made for rapid delivery of the baby.
Normally only one family member can be allowed in the delivery room during a C-section. They are there to support you during surgery.
Recovery : you will normally be in the recovery room for one hour after surgery, then transferred to a normal hospital room.
